Freddie Mac Releases Fourth Quarter 2007 Financial Results

Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE) today reported a net loss of $3.1 billion, or $5.37 per diluted common share, for the year ended December 31, 2007, compared to net income of $2.3 billion, or $3.00 per diluted common share, for 2006. For the fourth quarter of 2007, the net loss was $2.5 billion, or $3.97 per diluted common share, compared to a net loss of $401 million in the fourth quarter of 2006, or $0.73 per diluted common share.

Euro Area Unemployment Stable at 7.1% in January 2008

The euro area (EA15) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate stood at 7.1% in January 2008, unchanged compared with December 2007. It was 7.7% in January 2007. The EU271 unemployment rate was 6.8% in January 2008, the same as in December 20073. It was 7.5% in January 2007.

Euro Area Annual Inflation up to 3.2% in January 2008

Euro area annual inflation was 3.2% in January 2008, up from 3.1% in December 2007. A year earlier the rate was 1.8%. Monthly inflation was -0.4% in January 2008.

Fixed Mortgage Rates at 4-Month High

Fixed mortgage rates increased for the third week in a row, with the average conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate now 6.41 percent. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large lenders, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.4 discount and origination points.

US Inflation Now The Worry

Sometime in the next 24 hours figures will be released in the US confirming that the country has fallen into the grip of stagflation. The second update on US 4th quarter gross domestic product is due for release and should show a rise on the first estimate of 0.6%.
