More evidence yesterday of the extent of the disruption caused by the heavy snowstorms and bad weather in China in January and February. First it was inflation jumping above 7% in January (that will be updated today), yesterday it was news of a strong rise in producer prices last month, and a sharp fall in the size of the country's trade surplus.

Early estimates show the HFN Hedge Fund Aggregate Average, an equal weighted benchmark of all single manager hedge funds and CTA/managed futures products in the HedgeFund.net database, was +2.93% in February 2008. The HedgeFund.net database consists of over 8,000 current hedge fund, fund of funds, and CTA products.

Wall Street and European stocks were lower as oil once again touched a new record high and copper fell sharply. Wall Street was up to 1% or more lower on continuing fears about the health of major financial stocks, such as broker Bear Stearns which denied it had liquidity problems.

As the first quarter of 2008 draws to a close, domestic growth is not much stronger than in the fourth quarter of last year (just under 1 percent, annualized, versus 0.6 percent, respectively). Nor is this just a domestic trend. Growth in euro-land was only about 1.6 percent in the fourth quarter and probably not much higher right now.

In 2006, the EU27 spent 1.84% of GDP on Research & Development (R&D). In 2005, R&D intensity (i.e. R&D expenditure as a percentage of GDP) was also 1.84% and in 2000 it was 1.86%. In 2006, R&D expenditure in the EU27 amounted to more than 210 billion euro, compared with 170 billion euro in 2000.
