Oil companies put the brakes on the U.S. economy this spring by manipulating the supply of diesel fuel and spiking the price, according to a new study commissioned by Consumer Watchdog. The detailed report shows that oil companies and their refiners produced less diesel, imported less diesel and exported far more diesel early in 2008 than in previous years.

Amidst a 10 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average over the last month, the Chief Executive magazine CEO Index plunged 11.80 percent, or 11.3 points, to 84.5 points (the Index started at 100 points in October 2002) this month, according to its monthly polling of C-suite executives. The leading economic indicator has lingered around its historical lows throughout the last quarter.

Women are 20% less likely than men to have a paid job in OECD countries and they earn on average 17% less than men, according to the latest edition of OECD’s Employment Outlook. At least 30% of the gap in wages and 8% of the gap in employment rates result from discriminatory practices in the labour market.

Consumer prices in the OECD area rose by 3.9% in the year to May 2008, compared with 3.5% in the year to April 2008. This constitutes the highest inflation rate since June 2001. On a monthly basis, the price level rose by 0.7% in May, compared with 0.5% in April.
