Ten years of Economic and Monetary Union have been a major success, but improving growth rates is largely up to national governments implementing economic reform, MEPs were told at an Economics Committee hearing. Strengthening the international representation of the eurozone was also a key goal.

China's actual growth rate is now irrelevant: like all statistics its essentially a backward looking system of measuring growth in Gross Domestic Product. China's growth remains solid, but it is slowing: the 10.1% annual rate in the June quarter was the slowest since 2005 and it had an immediate impact on global markets, pushing oil down to its lowest level in six weeks and under $US130 a barrel.

Proposed tougher limits on harmful exhaust emissions from trucks, lorries and buses, including ozone precursors such as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons as well as particles, were backed by the Environment Committee in a report voted on 15 July. MEPs want the new "Euro VI" regulation emission limits to apply de facto from 1.1.2014, nine months earlier than the Commission proposed.

Internet coupons are of increasing interest to consumers, according to a recent analysis by consumer and media measurement firm Scarborough Research. Eleven percent of households currently obtain coupons via the Internet, and this has increased 83 percent since 2005.

Council adopted, by qualified majority, the emergency package of restructuring measures to tackle the fuel crisis in the fisheries sector proposed by the Commission on 8 July. The package will promote the restructuring of those segments of the European fishing fleet which have been hardest hit by the current fuel crisis, while cushioning its short-term social and economic impacts for those who commit to taking long-term action.
