Radio spectrum use must be co-ordinated and harmonised across the EU to enable citizens to benefit from new electronic services like mobile broadband internet access, says the Industry Committee. In reports approved on Monday night, MEPs advocate setting up a new European body of national telecommunications regulators to ensure that measures apply consistently EU wide and also call for incentives to invest in new infrastructure, including "next generation" access networks.

The Conference Board's Employment Trends Index (ETI)™ fell again in June, continuing a decline that began in July 2007 and suggesting more job losses in the coming months. The index fell by 0.6 percent in June to 111.9 from 112.6 in May and is down 8 percent since July 2007.

JupiterResearch projects that the broadband telephony market will nearly double in size from 14.7 million subscribers in 2007 to 28.4 million lines in 2013. Cable operators will see most of this increase, with their VoIP subscriber base nearly doubling during the forecast period, while growth for over-the-top VoIP providers will stagnate. The emergence of new service offerings, such as those from AT&T and Skype, will continue to generate buzz within the market.

While oil trading dominated commodity markets last week lead slumped sharply, losing 13%. In contrast oil gained 3.3% over the week as Brent crude moved past $US146 a barrel on Thursday but eased Friday to $US144.95 a barrel. Nymex August West Texas Intermediate, which hit a record of $US145.85 a barrel, yesterday fell $1 to $US144.25 a barrel.
