Credit Suisse Index Co., Inc., released its latest industry research, Analyzing Past Market Turmoil and Outcome for Hedge Funds, which has found that hedge funds are able to recover quickly after market turmoil. The most recent research examines the effects of five crises on hedge funds and world financial markets, finding that hedge funds, if affected, were able to return to positive returns quicker than global equity or debt markets.

The risk of liquidity is a not a major concern for the U.S. industrial sector as many companies have manageable debt maturities over the next few years, according to a Fitch Ratings report. These companies also took advantage of favorable credit conditions during first half (1H) 2007 to extend debt maturities and credit facility expirations.

The U.S. Import Price Index increased 1.0 percent in September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported, following a 0.3 percent drop in August. The September rise was led by a 5.4 percent increase in petroleum prices. Export prices also advanced in September, rising 0.3 percent after a 0.2 percent increase in August.

Despite tightening credit markets, private equity firms continue to find limited partners eager to invest in their latest funds, according to Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst. The October issue reports that U.S. private equity firms raised $199.4 billion in 295 funds during the first three quarters of 2007, a 29% increase over the $154.1 billion raised in 232 funds during the same period in 2006. With another 405 private equity funds still in the market to raise an additional $165.2 billion in capital, this year's fund-raising is on pace to best the record $254.3 billion raised in all of 2006.

On the last business day of August, there were 4.1 million job openings in the United States, and the job openings rate was 2.9 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The job openings rate was unchanged in August, while the hires rate and the total separations rate were essentially unchanged.
