The European Commission called for a renewed commitment to social justice by proposing a new, holistic approach to tackling poverty and promoting inclusion of people furthest from the labour market. While the EU strategy for growth and jobs is showing good results, Europe needs to do more to realise its full potential and achieve greater social justice and economic cohesion. The new strategy for 'active inclusion', which is taking shape through a wide-ranging public consultation, is a key element of the European Social Agenda.

Nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses among private industry employers in 2006 occurred at a rate of 4.4 cases per 100 equivalent full-time workers - a decline from 4.6 cases in 2005. Similarly, the number of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses reported in 2006 declined to 4.1 million cases, compared to 4.2 million cases in 2005. These findings were reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The current account of the euro area balance of payments (b.o.p.) recorded a deficit of EUR 1.4 billion in the second quarter of 2007. Deficits were recorded for the group of “other countries” (i.e. non G-10 countries outside the European Union), Japan, the EU institutions and Switzerland. By contrast, the main surpluses were with the United Kingdom and the countries that joined the European Union in 2004 and 2007, while the current account balance with the United States was close to zero.

A recent study of initial public offerings (IPOs) from Ernst & Young LLP has identified several similarities among companies that had successful IPOs and strong subsequent performance. These similarities include the age of the company (and their CEO), whether it has a global operation, breadth of investor support, and transaction activity post-IPO, among other findings.

EU annual inflation was 2.2% in September 2007, up from 1.9% in August. A year earlier the rate was 1.9%. Monthly inflation was 0.4% in September 2007.

The European Commission has published a summary of the 38 responses it received to a call for evidence regarding the functioning in EU Member States of private placement regimes. Under private placement securities can be sold privately to expert investors without triggering rules on investor protection, reporting and disclosures that apply when instruments are sold to the retail public.

Growth in merchandise trade exports in the Group of Seven countries slowed to a seasonally adjusted 0.4%, in the second quarter of 2007 compared with the previous quarter while import volumes fell 0.4%. On a year-on-year basis, G7 trade volumes continued to grow at lower rates, with both exports and imports up 2.3%.
