Mortgage rates soared this week, with the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate jumping more than one-half percentage point to 6.74 percent. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.42 discount and origination points.

The New York Employee Confidence Index decreased 2.4 points to 47.7 in September, according to the latest Spherion(R) Employment Report. The monthly survey of New York workers, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation, found that, contrary to August's report, more workers are concerned about job availability, and the future of their current employer.

The European Commission closed an infringement case against Poland for the lack of availability of caller location after the Polish authorities confirmed that it has been available for calls to the European emergency number 112 since 30 June. Under EU rules, Member States must ensure that operators provide emergency centres with the location of people calling 112 from fixed or mobile phones.

Between 2000 and 2007, EU27 exports of goods to Canada grew from 21.1 billion euro to 25.9 bn, while EU27 imports from Canada rose from 19.0 bn to 23.3 bn. As a result the EU27 surplus in trade with Canada increased slightly from 2.1 bn in 2000 to 2.6 bn in 2007. The share of Canada in the EU27's total external trade in goods has fallen between 2000 and 2007. In 2007, Canada accounted for 2.1% of EU27 exports and 1.6% of EU27 imports, and was the EU27's eleventh most important trading partner.
