In adopting an own-initiative report on water scarcity and droughts in the European Union, MEPs urge the Commission and Member States to acknowledge that deforestation and unrestrained urban development are contributing to growing water scarcity. There were three IPOs in September, one each on the TSE Mothers, OSE Hercules and JASDAQ markets. Thus far in 2008, there have been 32 IPOs: 11 on JASDAQ, 9 on TSE Mothers, 6 on OSE Hercules, 3 on the TSE 2nd section, and one each on the Nagoya Centrex, Sapporo Ambitious and JASDAQ NEO markets.

The Conference Board announced that the leading index for Korea declined 2.3 percent, and the coincident index declined 0.2 percent in August.

RBC CASH Index: U.S. Consumer Confidence Experiences Largest Single Month Decline

The implosion of Wall Street and the spreading economic crisis have taken a heavy toll on consumers, driving their confidence back down after a brief rally the past two months. According to the most recent results of the RBC CASH (Consumer Attitudes and Spending by Household) Index, consumer confidence dropped 32 points in October - the largest single-month decline in overall sentiment since the Index began in January 2002. The RBC CASH Index currently stands at 37.0 compared to 69.2 in September, driven down by the sharp decline in consumers' economic expectations.

Combating Undeclared Work: Member States Should Share Knowledge

The European Parliament adopted an own-initiative report on a European Commission proposal to step up efforts to combat undeclared work. MEPs call on the Commission to consider establishing a database on the various approaches and methodologies used to measure undeclared work in the Member States so as to promote the sharing of good practice and knowledge transfer in this area.
