The use of derivatives among U.S. companies is widespread, although an overwhelming majority of the exposure is concentrated among financial institutions, according to a Fitch Ratings review of first-quarter financial statements. The first-quarter 2009 (1Q'09) financial reports marked the first time that comprehensive derivatives disclosure was mandated for all U.S. companies.

How is the economic downturn affecting the American workplace? A new study released by the Families and Work Institute (FWI) finds that in the face of recession, and at a time of cost cutting, the overwhelming majority of employers (94%) are maintaining or increasing their workplace flexibility programs. In fact a quarter of the employers (26%) specifically used flexible workplace options - from reduced work weeks to telecommuting - to minimize the need for layoffs.

The number of Fortune 1000 firms that have a frozen pension plan increased again this year as companies continue to look for ways to control their retirement benefit expenses, according to an annual analysis by Watson Wyatt, a leading global consulting firm. Meanwhile, a separate study by Watson Wyatt found that freezing a pension plan does not lead to a boost in a company's stock price.

Panda Security, the Cloud Security Company, announced its worldwide barometer on the status of security at small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). According to the study, which surveyed 5,760 companies worldwide, 44 percent of the more than 1,400 US respondents have recently been infected by Internet threats. Worldwide, 58 percent were affected, with Brazil showing the highest infection rate at 86 percent. Only 8 percent of SMBs in Germany reported infections.

A new survey shows that 61% of Europeans think further impacts of the economic crisis on jobs are to be expected. A third of those in work are 'very concerned' that they may lose their jobs in the crisis, however 72% feel the EU has a positive impact in creating new job opportunities and fighting unemployment, and a third are aware of the European Social Fund – the EU's main tool for investing in workers and keeping them in work.

The IPO pipeline stood at 28 registrants as of June 30, 2009, down 36 percent from the 44 registrants as of Q1 (March 31, 2009), according to the quarterly Ernst & Young LLP US IPO Pipeline study. This reflects both renewed IPO activity and the aging of older registrants.
