Online recruitment activity across the European Union continued slowing in July as sluggish demand in Germany offset seasonal upticks in France and Italy. The Index’s year-on-year decline of 66 points (40 percent) represents the steepest annual drop on record, indicating the European labour market remains in contraction mode despite signs of stabilisation in some of the major markets. Sustained falls in sectors such as accounting, consulting, engineering, IT and R&D suggest many European businesses continue to rein in external costs and remain cautious about investing due to the uncertain economic climate.

In July, the total value added of the industrial enterprises above designated size was up 10.8 percent year-on-year, or 3.9 percentage points lower than that in July 2008, or 0.1 percentage point higher than that in June 2009; it was the third consecutive month which witnessed an acceleration of year-on-year growth. In the first seven months of this year, it was up 7.5 percent year-on-year, which was down by 8.6 percentage points over that in the same period of last year, or 0.5 percentage points higher than that in the first six months in 2009.

The weekly average rate borrowers were quoted on Zillow Mortgage Marketplace for 30-year fixed mortgages increased last week to 5.36 percent, up from 5.26 percent the week prior, according to the Zillow Mortgage Rate Monitor, compiled by leading real estate Web site Zillow.com®. Also, rates for 15-year fixed mortgages rose to 4.69 percent from 4.62 percent, and 5-1 adjustable rate mortgages rose to 4.28 percent, down from 4.21 the week prior.
