Euro area annual inflation was 1.9% in May 2007, unchanged compared with April. A year earlier the rate was 2.5%. Monthly inflation was 0.2% in May 2007. EU annual inflation was 2.1% in May 2007, down from 2.2% in April. A year earlier the rate was 2.4%. Monthly inflation was 0.3% in May 2007.

The arrest in late May of "King of Spam" Robert Alan Soloway focused attention on the scale of online criminal activity. Mr. Soloway was indicted on 35 counts involving billions of e-mails in an operation that made it much tougher for legitimate e-mail marketers to do their jobs.

May was the strongest month for money raising through IPOs on the London Stock Exchange since July last year. 23 new companies, from fourteen different sectors, conducted IPOs on the Exchange’s markets during the month, raising £5.7 billion between them. This total included: three international IPOs on the Main Market, which raised £4.3 billion between them; seven UK IPOs on the Main Market, raising £720.5 million between them; and 13 AIM IPOs raising £685.9 million.

Small and medium businesses (SMBs, or companies with up to 999 employees) in China are slated to spend a whopping US$46 billion on boosting their IT infrastructure (excluding telecoms) by 2010. This is up from US$21 billion in 2005, giving China-based SMBs a compound annual growth rate of 14% between 2005 and 2010.

Financial strains in the mortgage market have sparked a shift toward more secure mortgages in the early part of 2007, but many borrowers remain stuck with sky-rocketing payments, according to Dr. Susan M. Wachter, Professor of Real Estate and Finance at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
