On the heels of the new $856 billion health care bill proposed yesterday by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, doubt over health care reform passing this year still looms across the American public. Fifty-four percent of U.S. adults surveyed believe health care reform will not pass this year compared to 41 percent who do, according to the results of a new Deloitte Center for Health Solutions study.

With health care reform efforts ramping up after the summer break, many of the nation’s employers are focusing on the action in Congress and plan to adjust their benefit strategies based on how final legislation affects their costs, according to a survey of 433 HR and benefit executives from midsize and large organizations conducted by professional services firm Towers Perrin. Employers say they will not absorb any additional costs that result from reform and plan to take actions to avoid doing so, including reducing benefits, raising prices for customers and/or reducing head count.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA16) trade balance with the rest of the world in July 2009 gave a 12.6 bn euro surplus, compared with -3.5 bn in July 2008. The June 2009 balance was +5.4 bn, compared with -0.8 bn in June 2008. In July 2009 compared with June 2009, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 4.1%, while imports fell by 0.3%.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production decreased by 2.0% in the euro area (EA16) and by 1.1% in the EU27 in July 2009, compared with the previous month. In June, production fell by 0.3% and 0.8% respectively.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.4 percent in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The index has decreased 1.5 percent over the last 12 months on a not seasonally adjusted basis.

Real average hourly earnings fell 0.2 percent from July to August, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. This decline stemmed from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), up by 0.6 percent, outpacing 0.3 percent growth in average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory workers.
