Fifty-Four Percent of Americans Believe Health Care Reform Will Not Be Passed This Year

On the heels of the new $856 billion health care bill proposed yesterday by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, doubt over health care reform passing this year still looms across the American public. Fifty-four percent of U.S. adults surveyed believe health care reform will not pass this year compared to 41 percent who do, according to the results of a new Deloitte Center for Health Solutions study.

Economic Pressures Turning Companies to Supply Chains for Revenue Gains and Cost Savings

Economic pressures are forcing companies to employ their supply chains, primarily the sourcing and procurement functions, to contain costs and boost revenue, according to the 2009 Global Survey of Supply Chain Progress from CSC, Supply Chain Management Review, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and Michigan State University (MSU).

Employers Put Costs at the Top of Health Care Reform Priority List

With health care reform efforts ramping up after the summer break, many of the nation’s employers are focusing on the action in Congress and plan to adjust their benefit strategies based on how final legislation affects their costs, according to a survey of 433 HR and benefit executives from midsize and large organizations conducted by professional services firm Towers Perrin. Employers say they will not absorb any additional costs that result from reform and plan to take actions to avoid doing so, including reducing benefits, raising prices for customers and/or reducing head count.

UK's Pay-TV Market Climbs to $8.2 Billion by 2014

Pay-TV revenue in the U.K. will climb from $6.2 billion in 2009 to $8.2 billion by 2014 as IPTV grows at an impressive CAGR of 26 percent within the forecast period, according to the latest report from Pyramid Research, the telecom research arm of the Light Reading Communications Network.

The average conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate fell to 5.38 percent, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey. The average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.32 discount and origination points.

Euro Area External Trade Surplus 12.6 bn Euro in July 2009

The first estimate for the euro area (EA16) trade balance with the rest of the world in July 2009 gave a 12.6 bn euro surplus, compared with -3.5 bn in July 2008. The June 2009 balance was +5.4 bn, compared with -0.8 bn in June 2008. In July 2009 compared with June 2009, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 4.1%, while imports fell by 0.3%.

New Citibank Survey: Small Businesses Find Silver Lining in Recession

A new survey sponsored by Citibank has found that some small business owners and managers are finding a silver lining in the current recession, including an increase in the number of high-quality candidates available for hire, rising employee retention rates and gains in market share.

Construction Output Down by 2.0% in the Euro Area in July 2009

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production decreased by 2.0% in the euro area (EA16) and by 1.1% in the EU27 in July 2009, compared with the previous month. In June, production fell by 0.3% and 0.8% respectively.

U.S. Consumer Price Index in August 2009

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.4 percent in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The index has decreased 1.5 percent over the last 12 months on a not seasonally adjusted basis.

U.S. Real Earnings in August 2009

Real average hourly earnings fell 0.2 percent from July to August, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. This decline stemmed from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), up by 0.6 percent, outpacing 0.3 percent growth in average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory workers.
