Regional and state unemployment rates were generally little changed in August. Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia reported over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 16 states registered rate decreases, and 7 states had no rate change, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Over the year, jobless rates increased in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The national unemployment rate rose to 9.7 percent in August, up 0.3 percentage point from July and 3.5 points from August 2008.

A new Harris Poll finds that large numbers of people either believe damaging misinformation about the health care proposals being discussed in Washington or are not sure what to believe. The polls also shows that almost half of all adults continue to support what they see as President Obama’s health care reform proposals, significantly but not substantially more than oppose them. And, more people like the president’s proposals than like what they think the Democrats in Congress are proposing, and much more than what they think Republicans in Congress want.

Taxpayers will reap little benefit next year from the indexing of many features of the tax code, according to CCH, a Wolters Kluwer business and a leading provider of tax, accounting and audit information, software and services, which today released estimated income ranges for each 2010 tax bracket. CCH also projects the personal exemption to show no increase and the standard deduction to remain constant for all but those filing as heads of households.

Consumers believe retailers benefit far more from accepting credit and debit cards than they pay in costs, according to a new survey released by Visa Inc. The survey also finds that consumers believe merchants see card cost acceptance as a part of doing business, much like paying for utilities such as electricity.
