Moving the European Union towards a water-efficient and water-saving economy is the aim of a Communication presented by the European Commission. The objective is to open a debate on the ways the EU can address water scarcity and droughts in an environment dominated by climate change. The Communication presents an initial set of policy options and raises issues to be taken into account to ensure the availability of water for all human, economic and social activities. The Commission will report on the progress of these issues in 2008.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA13) trade balance with the rest of the world in May 2007 gave a 1.7 bn euro surplus, compared with -3.9 bn in May 2006. The April 2007 balance was +2.3 bn, compared with -2.7 bn in April 2006. The first estimate for May 2007 extra-EU27 trade was a deficit of 15.0 bn euro, compared with -17.9 bn in May 2006. In April 2007, the balance was -13.9 bn, compared with -16.6 bn in April 2006.

From the end of last year to the present, the Ministry of Commerce has successively issued the Administrative Measures for the Product Oil Market and the supplementary Guide Manual for Product Oil Operation Enterprises.

The medical profession is a growth industry: OECD Health Data 2007 shows that the number of doctors in OECD countries has increased by 35% over the past fifteen years to 2.8 million. In most countries, this growth was driven largely by rising numbers of specialists – up nearly 50% between 1990 and 2005 - compared with the 20% increase in general practitioners (GPs).

Schroders announced the results of its recent survey of American individual investors, which revealed that Americans view China as the world's dominant economic superpower in the next decade, when compared with the United States, India, Germany and Russia. Studies in the USA indicate that the world's electrical consumption is set to rise to 30 billion kWh by 2030 from 15.4 billion kWh in 2006. Governments and utilities today need to plan to supply large amounts of electrical energy efficiently, inexpensively and with minimal impact on the environment.
