The European Banking Federation (EBF) welcomes the entry into force of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID), which becomes applicable throughout the EU and the European Economic Area from 1 November 2007. Europe’s banks, trading platforms and ancillary service providers will from then on conduct their business under the new MiFID regime.

Unemployment rates were higher in September than a year earlier in 184 of the 369 metropolitan areas, lower in 154 areas, and unchanged in 31 areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Thirty-four metropolitan areas registered jobless rates below 3.0 percent, while two areas recorded rates higher than 10.0 percent. The national unemployment rate in September was 4.5 percent, not seasonally adjusted.

Data through August 2007, released by Standard & Poor's for its S&P/Case-Shiller(R) Home Price Indices, the leading measure of U.S. home prices, show further declines in the prices of existing single family homes across the United States, marking the 8th consecutive month of negative annual returns and the 21st consecutive month of decelerating returns.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which has been declining since August, fell further in October. The Index now stands at 95.6 (1985=100), down from 99.5 in September. The Present Situation Index decreased to 118.8 from 121.2 in September. The Expectations Index declined to 80.1 from 85.0.

In 2006, the sharp rise of gold price largely held down the consumption, especially the gold jewelry. According to the statistics of GFMS, the global gold consumption in 2006 was 3906 tons, down about 5%, of which jewelry consumption amounted to 2280 tons, decreasing nearly 427 tons.

Preliminary results of a new survey by Deloitte & Touche LLP show that approximately 20 percent of CFOs and senior finance professionals (representing approximately 300 U.S. companies) would consider adopting International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), if given a choice by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Approximately two-thirds of those companies would consider adopting IFRS within the next three years.

What do Americans know, think and believe about the decline of the U.S. dollar against other major currencies such as the Euro? A new Harris Poll finds that most adult Americans (79%) know that the dollar has fallen against other major currencies and half (51%) know it has fallen “a lot”, over the last few years. Majorities believe the decline of the dollar is bad for the reputation and influence of the United States, bad for consumers and the economy and (contrary to the consensus among economists) bad for American exports.
