Jean-Claude Trichet told the Economics Committee on Wednesday that the "hump" in inflation would be longer than previously projected and risks were on the upside. Growth for the eurozone should be at around potential in the year ahead, but risks to that projection were on the downside. The continuing turbulence in financial markets also featured strongly in the final "monetary dialogue" with the European Central Bank President of 2007.

A total of 156.7 million persons worked at some point during 2006, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The proportion of workers who worked full time, year round rose to 68.4 percent in 2006 from 67.5 percent in 2005. The number of persons who experienced some unemployment in 2006 was 14.4 million, about the same as a year earlier.

The Commission's revised proposal for a Directive on the promotion of clean and energy efficient road transport vehicles introduces sustainable economics into public procurement of vehicles and transport services. Public authorities will use criteria for lifetime costs for energy consumption, CO2 emissions and pollutant emissions when they procure vehicles. A harmonised methodology will be applied to quantify these costs.

The European Commission proposed legislation to reduce the average CO2 emissions of new passenger cars to 120 grams per kilometre by 2012. The proposed legislation is the cornerstone of the EU's strategy to improve the fuel economy of cars, which account for about 12% of the European Union's carbon emissions. The proposal further underlines the EU's leadership and determination to deliver on its greenhouse gas commitments under the Kyoto Protocol and beyond.

The Transport Committee has confirmed that remaining postal service monopolies should expire by 2011 - or 2013 for some Member States. In its second reading vote on Tuesday, the committee decided by an overwhelming majority to stick to the compromise already endorsed by the Council on the opening up of EU postal services to competition. This paves the way for a final vote at the Brussels plenary session on 31 January.
