According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, mobile phone shipments in the United States defied the economic gloom and grew 5 percent annually, to reach 42 million units during Q2 2008. Motorola had a strong quarter and maintained its number one position in the region.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported preliminary productivity data-as measured by output per hour of all persons-for the second quarter of 2008. The seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity change in the second quarter were: 2.3 percent in the business sector and 2.2 percent in the nonfarm business sector.

The number of IPOs in 2008 thus far is the smallest in ten years. During the first seven months of the year, only 25 companies went public. July had one IPO, the fourth consecutive month with only a single offering. Media reports about IPOs have almost disappeared. Nikkei Veritas alone is still publishing articles about the IPO market. But this company is having difficulty finding subjects to write about, just as I do with my monthly report.

The results of the July 2008 bank lending survey referring to the second quarter of 2008 indicate somewhat lower net tightening of credit standards for loans to enterprises than was observed in the first quarter. The most important factor in the net tightening continued to be a deterioration in expectations about the economic outlook. The impact on banks of the cost of funds and balance sheet constraints was somewhat lower than the impact of concerns about the economic outlook.

Lower industry volumes and the massive decline in truck and SUV sales have put as many as one-third of automotive suppliers in North America at risk of bankruptcy, according to the Summer 2008 Automotive Industry Review prepared by Grant Thornton Corporate Advisory and Restructuring Services. At the same time, bankruptcy concerns for the Detroit Three domestic automakers are overblown, despite recent credit downgrades by the major debt rating agencies.

With workers' fears about job security and upward mobility at record highs, education may prove to be the saving grace. A new study by eLearners.com, web resource of EducationDynamics, and Kelton Research found that nearly one in five (19%) Americans - that equals about 40 million adults - know someone at their current or past workplace who has been passed over for a job because they didn't have the right degree. One in ten (10%) respondents say they themselves have been denied a job at some point for not having a degree.

The European Commission has allocated a further €21 million in humanitarian aid for the Horn of Africa: Assistance is being provided to vulnerable populations in Somalia (€13m), Eritrea (€4m) and Ethiopia (€4m). So far in 2008, the Commission has provided nearly €120 million in humanitarian aid, including food aid, to needy people in the Horn of Africa (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda). The funds are channelled through the Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.
