In a recently published report, Fitch Ratings says with the world economy entering into a severe recession, consumer product companies, particularly those in the appliances, home, hardware and tools sector, will suffer in the coming year. Fitch expects margins and free cash flow to continue trending downward in 2009, exacerbated by a weakening global economy. Those companies dependent on discretionary spending will continue experiencing profit and cash flow deterioration. Given these dynamics, Fitch expects industry participants to be focused on operations and liquidity.

Following a series of meetings between MEPs and the French Presidency of the Council, the two sides have informally agreed details of future targets on CO2 emissions from cars. While the Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) posted a slight gain, the outlook for the restaurant industry remained dampened in October, as the National Restaurant Association's comprehensive index of restaurant activity stood below 100 for the 12th consecutive month. The RPI - a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry - stood at 97.1 in October, up 0.4 percent from September's record low of 96.7.
