On 1 January 2009, euro banknotes and coins were successfully introduced in Slovakia – the sixteenth Member State of the European Union to adopt the euro. Until 16 January 2009, it will be possible to pay in cash using either euro or Slovak koruna banknotes and coins. However, change will only be given in euro. Thereafter, the euro will be the sole legal tender. An information campaign has been run to inform Slovak citizens of the visual elements of the euro banknotes and coins, their security features and the modalities for their introduction in Slovakia.

Companies across the London Stock Exchange’s markets raised a record £63 billion in new and further issues of equity during the course of 2008, significantly ahead of the total for the whole of 2007. These strong figures, despite difficult market conditions, were underpinned by a number of substantial secondary issues throughout the year, together with key international wins which consolidated the London’s position as the international capital market of choice. There is a good IPO pipeline awaiting an improvement in market conditions.

Mortgage rates ended 2008 on a downswing, with the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate falling to 5.64 percent. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.39 discount and origination points.

The euro area has two reasons to celebrate: the number of European Union countries that share the same currency grew to 16 with Slovakia and it is the 10th anniversary of the euro. All available data indicate that the changeover from the Slovak koruna went well. Citizens are able to withdraw euro cash from ATMs all over Slovakia and to use it for daily payments.

The outlook for the restaurant industry worsened in November, as the National Restaurant Association's comprehensive index of restaurant activity fell to a record-low level. The Association's Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) - a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry - stood at 96.7 in November, down 0.4 percent from October and its 13th consecutive month below 100.
