The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods decreased 1.2 percent in March, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. This decline followed a 0.1-percent advance in February and a 0.8-percent increase in January. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by producers of intermediate goods fell 1.5 percent after decreasing 0.9 percent a month earlier, and the crude goods index declined 0.3 percent following a 4.5-percent drop in February.

Despite a short-term reduction, electricity prices are estimated to rise by 10 - 15% in 2013, following the tightening of restrictions on emissions levels. This has caused concern amongst intensive energy users such as the steel, aluminium, cement and paper industries. They fear that the price increase, along with other related factors, will significantly increase their costs at the time when they will still be recovering from the current economic slowdown. In order to remain successful in the future, they will need to hedge looming high costs by investing in emissions-reducing technologies.

The weekly average rate borrowers were quoted on Zillow Mortgage Marketplace for thirty-year mortgages remained relatively flat during the past week. Last week's rate was 5.10 percent, up slightly from 5.08 percent the week prior, according to the Zillow Mortgage Rate Monitor, compiled by leading real estate Web site Zillow.com®. Meanwhile, rates for 15-year fixed mortgages decreased to 4.73 percent, down from 4.77 percent and 5-1 adjustable rate mortgages also decreased, down to 4.65 percent from 4.71 percent the week prior.
