Consumer prices in the OECD area rose by 0.2 % in the year to October 2009, a positive rate for the first time since May 2009. Month-on-month, prices increased by 0.1% in October, after remaining stable in September 2009.

Convio, Inc. estimates that US online giving to nonprofit organization will be more than $4 billion during the holiday season of 2009 as more than 111 million say they plan to give via the Internet this year. The North American Technographics® Omnibus Online Survey, Q4 2009 (US), a commissioned omnibus survey conducted by Forrester’s Technographics® on behalf of Convio, reveals that in the US more than 63% of online consumers plan to use the Internet to donate to charities of their choice during the upcoming holiday season, up from 51% in 2008.

As the country’s economic troubles continue, one of the spotlights has been on the troubled banking sector. The question of what did they know and when did they know it has been asked by the American public and the reputation of the industry has slid because of this. Every year, Americans are asked to say what industries they believe should be more regulated by the government and which industries they find most honest and truthful. Needless to say, banks are now seen as needing more regulation and are not seen as trustworthy and honest as they once were.

The euro area (EA16) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 9.8% in October 2009, the same as in September. It was 7.9% in October 2008. The EU27 unemployment rate was 9.3% in October 2009, compared with 9.2% in September. It was 7.3% in October 2008.

70% of UK workers admitted to shopping for Christmas presents online during work hours according to a new research by money saving website, VoucherCodes.co.uk. More shockingly, a fifth of the 3,000 people surveyed admitted to spending up to a staggering 10 hours a week searching and buying the perfect Christmas gifts online at work.

In spite of the economic downturn, Americans are entering this holiday season willing to support charities in two ways, with 62 percent planning to dig deep into their own wallets to support charities and nearly 40 percent talking with others about donating to charity instead of buying them a gift, according to a new survey for the American Red Cross.

comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world, reported holiday season retail e-commerce spending for the first 27 days of the November – December 2009 holiday season. For the holiday season-to-date, $10.57 billion has been spent online, marking a 3-percent increase versus the corresponding days last year. Black Friday (November 27) saw $595 million in online sales, making it the second heaviest online spending day to date in 2009 and representing an 11-percent increase versus Black Friday 2008.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index™ (LEI) for the Euro Area increased 0.9 percent in October to 101.4 (2004 = 100), following a 1.0 percent increase in September and a 1.9 percent increase in August. Five of the eight components contributed positively to the index this month. However, its six-month growth rate slowed slightly in October.
