There were 3.1 million job openings on the last business day of April 2010, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The job openings rate increased over the month to 2.3 percent. The hires rate (3.3 percent) and the separations rate (3.1 percent) were unchanged. This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the total nonfarm sector by industry and geographic region.

While most U.S. employees will have to wait to take advantage of the new health care reform provision that extends health insurance coverage to adult children up to age 26, a new survey by Hewitt Associates, a global human resources consulting and outsourcing company, shows that approximately 950,000 workers will be able to cover these dependents earlier than the law requires. This comes as good news for many of these employees, who may be parents of adult children who are unable to secure health coverage through other means.

The Conference Board Employment Trends Index™ (ETI) increased again in May for the ninth consecutive month. The index now stands at 95.7, up from April's revised figure of 95.2. The index is up almost 9 percent from a year ago.
